Alden Library, Ohio University

WELCOME TO ALDEN LIBRARY

Park Place, or 2nd floor, entry to Alden Library

This was one of my most favorite place in Ohio University. This library is very huge with comprehensive collection. In weekday it’s open 24 hours, so can still doing your assignment even it’s already in very early morning. However, in weekend you just can access it until dark (I don’t remember the exact schedule). If you don’t have any laptop, don’t worry it has a lot of PC plus printer and scanner. All you need is just your OAK ID and it’s all free except printing and copying.

If you want to do your assignment with your friends and need to discuss with them, you can reserve a group study room. 9 glassed-in rooms each have a whiteboard, and most have LCD projectors which may be connected to laptop computers. Rooms may be reserved online for three-hour blocks of time at Group Study Room Reservations page. An Ohio Univesity ID card is needed to use the rooms.

There is also a student writing center where you can meet a staff who can help you to write a good writing. He will help you through brainstorming, editing, and grammar checking.

The reason why this library is special for me is Southeast Asia Center. This is one of the most comprehensive Southeast Asia studies collection that America has ever had. In this section area, I found a lot of novel from Indonesia such as Bumi Manusia, Anak Semua Bangsa and even the brand new successful novel : Ketika Cinta Bertasbih part 1 and 2. We also can find a lot of newspapers and magazine that published in Indonesia here.

Alden library also provides various collection such as fine arts, children collection, leisure books, and governmental document.

Fine Arts Collections                                                              Governmental Documents

Another reason why this library is so special is the presence of Media Library. I often borrowed many films and video there from the classic one to the brand new released. The Media Library has a collection of over 30,000 audio and visual media titles, in various formats such as video and DVD, audio and CD-ROM.

For the disable students, there is a special room that can help them access a lot of information. This room is called the G. Lynn Shostak Adaptive Equipment Room which has a computer, a scanner and a Braille printer. Software on the computer includes: DragonSpeak, TextHelp, and Kurzweil

Picture of the Adaptive Equipment Disabilities Room.

Finally if you are hungry or thirsty you can stop at a cafe inside the library. You can offer a cup of coffee, tea,and other beverages there.

Ditolak donor darah

” “Pernah”, jawabku. “Kapan?”, tanya dia lagi. Saya jawab, “Juli”. Lalu dia menghitung-hitung dengan jarinya. “Wah belum bisa donor, mas. Belum enam bulan sejak Mas sembuh.

Sebelum keluar comot satu pisang dulu tentunya.

Sejurus kemudian sebuah rencana singkat aku buat.

Lalu dia berkata,”May I take a look ur ID card”. Aku berikan kartu mahasiswaku. Mungkin karena melihat mata sipitku dia lalu melanjutkan pertanyaannya. “Where are you from?”. Dengan bangga aku jawab, “I’m from Indonesia”. ” How long you have been here?” she aked me again. I said, “two weeks”. Perempuan itu mengernyitkan dahi mendengar jawabanku. Lalu dia berkata,”Sorry mister, you are not allowed to donate your blood. You’re from Indonesia, a tropical country which potentially brings dengue or malaria through ur blood. You can donate ur blood after you have been living here for at least two years. Sorry.” “Ok, I understand. No problem”, I replied. Aku kemasi barangku lalu beranjak keluar ruangan itu. Dua orang wanita di meja registrasi tak lepas memandangiku sembari aku melangkah keluar. Aku tahu mereka mendengar percakapan kami.

Ucapan perawat tadi sungguh menyambarku.

Morning Conversation (east-west)

A week before I went back to Indonesia, I had an opportunity to spent my weekend with an American family. So our group we was divided into several smaller groups. Each group contained 2-4 persons, but there was one of us who did not have any partner. She went alone for home stay. The reason why one of us just stay alone but the others were in group were our different preferences, beliefs, and thought. Some of us hate dog and does not eat pork whereas the others feels convenient with them. My small group consisted of four persons and all of  us have the same preferences which is NO DOG. (hehehe)

So we went to Cincinnati and met our new home stay family. Lucky us because we’re in De Gregs. Phil De Greg is a Professor of music in University of Cincinnati and her wife is Carol De Greg who works for hospital. She is a nurse. They have two daughter, Nicole and Julia. We were very happy because it was our first experience to be in American real family life. The next 3 days we fulfilled with talking, museum visiting, going to church, dinner of course etc.

In this writing,  I want to share to you about our morning talks before breakfast. As all u know  that we live in the east side of the world whereas America lies in another side, west side. The 9/11 tragedy brought a big influence to the conversation between east and west. Many youngsters in the east hate America, especially they who come from the Moslem world. Many people in the Moslem world hate Bush due to his policy to attack Afganistan and Iraq. Their invasion did not work and make a much more giant conflict among the civilians.

On the other side, 9/11 also brought a new huge fear to the American. FYI, there is no invasion or war in America before this tragedy. The war that involved America always happened outside and far away from the Uncle Sam’s home land, such as Vietnam war, Pasific war (world war 2), and Gulf war. Therefore, the attack made the civilians panic and believed that their home land was not safe anymore. War was solution for this difficult problem. The US Army searched and attacked the “terrorist” wherever they are. Most American agreed that they have to protect their home by overcome the terrorist. That’s why George Walker Bush was elected for the second period.

However not every single person in America supported this policy. Phil and Carol are two of them. Carol said to us her experience related to this war. One day Carol and Phil went to Brazil where Phil usually visits to make music. When their plane take off, the US Army started to bombed Iraq. Phil and Carol landed safely. Then they went to their friend’s home. While their doing music or other activity (im not sure), a boy walked towards Carol. In his innocent face, the boy asked her,”Why do you start the war?”. To heard that Carol was  shocked and then realized that maybe there are many people in the world have the same question and feeling like this boy.

Started from that moment, Carol began to welcome foreigners to stay at her home. She wanted to share that American love peace and hate war.  There some guests from Ukraine and other country who has stayed in her home before us. Carol’s idea worked effectively to share her peaceful message and we also felt it. After spent three days in her home, we realized that we’re the same, even we live on different side of the world (east-west). We do love peace and respect the differences between us. It’s not fair to blame somebody who you do not recognize just because their government’s policy, religion, skin, hair or even different place of live.

The home stay program brought us to a new understanding. A conversation between east and west was began and I never stop to share this experience to my friends and people around me. We can make this world a better and safer place not with hate but only love and respect.

Top 10 the Fastest Roller Coaster in The World

Everyone loves a thrill and one of the best ways to get this is on a roller coaster. Everyone has their own way of rating a roller coaster – number of inversions, longest drop, fastest, so rating them is a difficult task. That is the reason I have opted to go for speed as the measure of greatness. This is a list of the ten fastest roller coasters to date (September 2007).

10. Phantom’s Revenge – Kennywood, West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, USA

Kw-5-31-04-Kennywood-Sign

Top Speed: 82 mph / 131.9 km/h

In 2001, the Phantom’s Revenge was built to replace the Steel Phantom, which had consistently been ranked in the top five roller coasters in the world. It includes a 228 foot drop, subterranean tunnel, and reaches a maximum speed of 82 miles per hour. For the sake of tradition, some of the features of the Steel Phantom were retained, including the steel track. Replacing the loops and corkscrew, it now offers an array of hills and drops.

9. Goliath – Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, California, USA

Sfog Goliath Art01

Top Speed: 85 mph / 136.7 km/h

Not only is the Goliath the 9th fastest roller coaster, but it also has the third highest drop and is the seventh tallest (standing at over 20 stories high). It includes a 255 foot drop, at 85 miles per hour, leading to a tunnel full of smoke. It also includes camel-like humps and an amazing bunny hop in which riders float off their seats due the force. It is recognized as one of the most entertaining roller coasters in the world.

8. Titan – Six Flags Over Texas, Arlington, Texas, USA

03289 Six Flags Titan

Top Speed: 85 mph / 136.7 km/h

The Titan was built by the same Swiss designers that built the Goliath but includes extra twists. It has 5,280 feet of track, allowing for more drops, loops, and corkscrews. After dropping from the 255 foot hill, you are plunged in to a dark tunnel at the speed of 85 miles per hour. Titan includes a spiral that creates forces of up to 4.5gs.

7. Millennium Force – Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, USA

Mforce

Top Speed: 93 mph / 149.7 km/h

Debuting in May, 2000, the Millennium Force is one of the highest roller coasters in the world. It boasts 10 world records. It rises to a height of 310 feet and travels through Cedar Point Park before crossing on to an island. During the trip you experience corkscrew turns in dark tunnels, 300 foot drops, and an 80 degree plummet down its highest point. The 2 minute 20 second ride covers 13 acres of track.

6. Steel Dragon 2000 – Nagashima Spa Land, Mie Prefecture, Japan

Steeldragon

Top Speed: 95 mph / 152.9 km/h

Steel Dragon 2000 is the tallest coaster to utilize a traditional chain lift. Because of the length of the lift hill, two chains are used – one for the bottom half and one for the top half. A single chain would have been excessively long and heavy, at least twice the weight of one of the trains. As a result, two trains can safely occupy the lift simultaneously. It debuted only months after Millennium Force and surpassed the Cedar Point coaster as the world’s tallest complete-circuit coaster. It also set a record for longest track length – 8133 feet, 2 inches (2479 m).

5. Superman: The Escape – Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, California, USA

Superman2.Jpg

Top Speed: 100 mph / 161 km/h

Superman: The Escape, is probably the most hair-raising of the coasters listed here. Instead of looping and twisting, the Escape is a straight track that rises to 41 stories in a matter of seconds and then, after pausing, drops back down. The ride is L-shaped and accelerates to 100 miles per hour (the first roller-coaster to reach that speed) in 7 seconds. The drop involves 6.5 seconds of weightlessness and when you drop, you drop backwards.

4. Tower of Terror – Dreamworld, Coomera, Queensland, Australia

Tower Of Terror 02

Top Speed: 100 mph / 161 km/h

Tower Of Terror is a steel reverse freefall coaster. The six ton passenger vehicle, is electro-magnetically powered, accelerating its passengers rapidly to 160.9 km/h (100 mph) in seven seconds. The track then turns skyward, with the passengers pulling 4.5 G’s. The car climbs to almost 38 stories high. Following the climb, there is a 6.5 second free-fall before the 90 degree turn is executed in reverse. The vehicle then hurtles into the station where it comes to a rapid stop.

3. Dodonpa – Fuji-Q Highland, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan

Dodonpa9

Top Speed: 106.9 mph / 172 km/h

Dodonpa opened in 2001 and is a steel sit-down roller coaster with a compressed air launch. It is 52 metres (170 feet) tall, and has a launch speed of 172 km/h (107 mph), which is reached in less than 2 seconds. The launch is followed by a huge, sweeping, overbanked curve, giving riders a chance to catch their breath back, before they hit the 170 foot top hat; an element with some extreme negative G forces. The name ‘Dodonpa’ comes from the musical sound which is played to customers waiting to board it.

2. Top Thrill Dragster – Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, USA

Dragster

Top Speed: 120 mph / 193 km/h

Top Thrill Dragster was the first “Strata Coaster,” loosely defined as a complete circuit coaster that is 400 to 499 feet tall. It was the last one to use lapbars instead of over-the-shoulder restraints due to mechanical problems. Shortly after reaching its maximum velocity in less than four seconds, the train begins its ascent up a 90-degree incline that has a 90-degree counter-clockwise twist that takes the train straight over the top of the 420 foot hill, where riders will experience significant airtime (zero g-forces). On the way down the other side, there is a 270-degree clockwise twist that leads into the magnetic braking section that brings the train to a swift but comfortable stop.

1. Kingda Ka – Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson Township, New Jersey, USA

Kk-Main1

Top Speed: 128 mph / 206 km/h

Kingda Ka is not just the fastest, but also the tallest roller coaster in the world. A hydraulic launch mechanism rockets the train from 0 to 128 miles per hour (206 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, pulling about 1.67 g’s. At the end of the launch track, the train climbs the main tower, twisting 90 degrees to the right before reaching a height of 456 feet (139.5 m). The train then descends 418 feet (127 m) straight down through a 270-degree spiral. Finally, the train climbs the second, 129 foot hill, producing a moment of weightlessness before being smoothly brought to a stop by the magnetic brakes. Due to the high speed and open nature of the trains, this ride will not operate in even light rain, as rider contact with rain drops can cause discomfort.

Tips Wawacara IELSP

1. Be on time.

2. Dress Well.

3. Focus on your document. Just focus on ur document.

4. Be Concise.

5. Proof that you are different. Remember: we are shouting in the crowd!

6. Show the relation between this scholarship and ur future career or education plan.

My Immersion Class

This is my class in Ohio University, take a look this picture below

(from left to right) Ivy, lupa, Element, Agung, Amy, Cici, Cai, Jason, Rain, Ester, Anna Wolf, me) There are two other who did not come.

We got an placement test and campus orientation on the first day in Ohio University. The result sent me to AE 52D, the same class as Agung and Ester. The next day we went to the class. We had three classes every day which are Reading Class 9.00-10.00, Listening, Note Taking, Speaking (LNS) Class 10.00-11.00, and Core Class (12.00-15.00). The picture above is my core class.

Every class has different objectives. The objective of Reading class is to enhance student’s ability in speed of reading and comprehension. Different with reading class, LNS class focus on three main objectives which are listening, note taking, and speaking. Core class is quite similar with reading coz in this class we also learn about reading but also grammar and writing.

My immersion class consists of just two nation : Indonesian and Chinese. The Chinese students are going to study in academic class in Ohio University, but they must fulfill some requirement before they have their seat. One of them is to fulfill the minimum TOEFL score at particular field of study. Differ from the the Chinese, Indonesian students won’t go to the academic class. Our program just push us to study well and finish exam at the end of program.

Although we came from different country, we did not find any difficulty to make a friendship. We share each other about our own culture and tradition. We had a lot of conversation during the break and outside the class. I told them about Bali and Komodo island. They taught me about how to count in Chinese.

There’s also another interesting thing about Chinese student, which is their names. My Chinese friends have two different name. The first one is their original name and the second one is their American name. Here are some example Cai –> Stanley   Yang Meng –> Ivy etc. The reason why they have American name is just to make easier for others to call their names. It is a fact that is not easy to say a word that foreign for you. Beside Stanley and Ivy, there are also Element, Rain, Jason, Amy, Ardell, and Cici.

This immersion class was very helpful for us to understand the diversity of culture in the world. It helped us to open our mind, receive their culture and respect to it. I also believe that they also very thankful to the class so that they could knew us and our culture
